Sara Laughlin, the library’s director. MCPL is a cooling station but will not be open Wednesday but open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
Anyone sweltering in non air-conditioned homes or apartments — or those who have no home at all — can cool off in air-conditioned comfort at several spots around town.
One is the Monroe County Public Library, which will be closed Wednesday but open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
Sara Laughlin, the library’s director, said the library will show the movie, “Happy Feet” from 1-3 p.m. Friday in the auditorium, and “Read to a Dog” from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Ellettsville branch. The Ellettsville branch is open 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
“People can also come in and read a book or some of our 400 magazines, or check their email,” she said. “There will be a lot of literacy-based play in the children’s department, and children can earn reading points by doing the weekly challenge in our summer reading program.”
Lt. Sharon Tennyson of the Salvation Army in Bloomington said when the temperature is 100 degrees or higher, the Salvation Army’s Thrift Store at 111 N. Rogers serves as an official cooling station.
The Thrift Store, open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, has a water station, snack table and air conditioning “that is working fabulously,” she said. But the store will be closed Wednesday.
Bloomington fire chief Roger Kerr said all five Bloomington fire stations, while not designated as official cooling stations, are open to take in overheated citizens.
“Not all our bays are air conditioned, but they have fans and people can come inside and get some water or Gatorade,” he said.
Other options are the Shalom Center, some local churches, and the College Mall — where you can buy something cool to drink or relax in a chair or couch.
The Shalom Center at 620 S. Walnut St. will provide water and an air-conditioned environment to all from 8 a.m.-noon Wednesday, and from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. all other week days.
St. Thomas Lutheran Church at 3800 East Third St. will offer its building as a cooling center from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, including July 4.
Alan Phillips, the pastoral care minister at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, said the church has signed up with the Red Cross to serve as an emergency shelter if the Red Cross asks it to open a shelter, but the Red Cross has not yet made that request.
“But we have a chapel open for meditation and prayer and would never turn anyone away,” he said. “We also work with local agencies to help people stay cool on an individual basis.”
Maria Delmar Carrasquillo, director of emergency services for the Monroe County Chapter of the American Red Cross, said the Red Cross is urging people to stay indoors and well hydrated.
“And if you have neighbors who you feel may need assistance, you may want to check on them,” she said.
Greene County
Last week the Greene County Emergency Management Agency requested that the county’s cities, towns, fire departments, churches and other entities open their doors and become cooling centers for people who do not have air conditioning. The agency asked such cooling centers to post signs and alert the local media.
Roger Axe, the agency’s director, said shelters were opened in Bloomfield, Jasonville and Linton last week. The Linton shelter, which was open through Tuesday but is now closed, was at the Saron United Church of Christ.
“Attendance was sparse,” said the church’s pastor, Michael Roth. “But the people who really need access to this service are not the ones who subscribe to the paper. So the low usage had nothing to do with the need but a lot to do with the access of information that escapes them.”
Axe said no one used the shelters in Bloomfield and Jasonville, which were open Thursday and Friday last week.
“That was the first time, to my knowledge, that we’ve ever opened cooling stations in Bloomfield or Jasonville,” he said. “I’m hoping this week that a lot of people will be off work, so they can take in their friends or relatives who need to stay cool. But if we see the need arise we will not hesitate to open the cooling shelters again.”
